5 women with different experiences of abuse share their stories of recovery through Vida…
Themes include family abuse both physical and psychological, financial abuse, PTSD
“Get yourself out because for me, one of the best things I ever did, because I am, I’m able to be happy even though I do have all the trauma and the anxiety that comes with it. I’m in a happy place now.”
Themes include sexual abuse, rape, financial abuse, PTSD, Depression
“The most helpful was being able to live my life the way that I wanted to live it. And being able to get the old (me back) , if I’d have still been in that situation, my life wouldn’t be as it is today. And it’s Vida that I thank for getting me here.”
“don’t feel scared, don’t feel ashamed, don’t feel that it’s your fault. And take those first steps and it’s really, really difficult. And when I first came to the support group, I shut the door and then I had to come back with a support worker. ..you can do it and nobody should have to face abuse.”
Themes include Panic Attacks, Flashbacks, Anxiety
“from that first assessment and those New Beginnings groups, you do start to realize you’re not alone…”
“No matter what you’ve been told in your past, you do deserve help. You don’t have to listen to that negative, critical voice.”
“…being able to trust and open up and being able to access the kind of specialist therapy at no cost has been phenomenal…. to have an organisation that’s very safe and warm and welcoming, that kind of gets it and have the exact sort of specialist knowledge to help you through it is brilliant because, you know, doctors don’t always get it. So, I think it’s just phenomenal.”
“ I still have challenges…but I’ve got a deeper understanding of myself. I’ve got a community that I never had. I’m able to support others in the same situation. I’ve trained as a therapist. I like myself a lot more. And I feel safe.”
“…you’re not alone. You may think you are, but you’re not and everything that you’re thinking and feeling is normal.”
“I found Vida amazing and like a safe zone. Somewhere to go where I was safe. Everyone is in the same shoes as you and no one judges… It’s a great place to go to where you won’t feel alone and you will get great support. It is like another family.”
A huge THANK YOU to our interviewees for sharing their positive recovery journeys through Vida and giving hope to other women.
