Help in a Mental Health Crisis

This information is to support you in a mental health crisis, alongside your own crisis safety plan [if you have one].

Important – try to inform supportive family or friends how you are feeling.

During office hours: [between 9am – 5pm Monday – Friday]

  • Contact your community mental health worker if you have one

  • Ring your GP and arrange for an emergency appointment as soon as possible

Outside office hours: [between 5pm – 9am Monday – Friday and at weekends]

  • Contact NHS Direct on 111 and select OPTION 2 for mental health support. NHS Direct can offer advice 24/7 – 365 days a year. It is free to call from a landline or mobile phone.
  • Ring your GP to contact the out of hours GP service.
  • Ring or go straight to Northern General Hospital Accident & Emergency department (tel 0114 243 43 43). The Mental Health Crisis and Home Treatment Team and Liaison Psychiatry Teams can provide assessments.

IF YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE IS IN IMMEDIATE RISK OF SERIOUS HARM OR INJURY, AND CAN’T GO TO A&E, YOU SHOULD CALL THE EMERGENCY SERVICE BY DIALLING 999.
