Why don’t they just leave? understanding coercive control

A full or half day programme designed to develop a good understanding of coercive controlling behaviour [CCB] in the context of domestic and sexual abuse.

Learners will be able to:

  • Describe controlling and coercive behaviours used by perpetrators of abuse.
  • Recognise the impacts of CCB, additional vulnerabilities, and barriers to reporting and seeking help.
  • Describe the difficulties of leaving an abusive relationship.
  • Recognise tactics used by perpetrators to manipulate professionals.
  • Describe how CCB is defined in law [Serious Crime Act 2015, s.76] and challenges for identifying and providing evidence to support prosecutions.
  • Explore a needs-led, strengths based approach to engaging survivors and their children, to build resilience and achieve change that lasts.
  • Describe support available locally and pathways to specialist services.
